“The Final Word Isn’t Yours”
Proverbs 21:2
Red Bible p. 463
I. “Your judgment” {v. 2a}
What is a common source of right and wrong for people?
their own wisdom and insight; people believe their way is the right way; they justify their decisions/ actions based on their own perceptions
“In those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did what was right in his own eyes.” Judges 21:25 NASB

What is the problem with this source?
it is deceptive; it may “feel” right, but isn’t based on the wisdom of God
“The way of a fool seems right to him, but a wise man listens to advice.” Proverbs 12:15 NIV `84

“There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death.” Proverbs 14:12 NIV `84

“See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and basic principles of this world rather than on Christ.” Colossians 2:8 NIV `84

“Be happy, young man, while you are young, and let your heart give you joy in the days of your youth. Follow the ways of your heart and whatever your eyes see, but know that for all these things God will bring you to judgment.” Ecclesiastes 11:9 NIV `84
Judges 21:25; 17:6; Proverbs 12:15; 14:12; Colossians 2:8; Ecclesiastes 11:9
II. “His judgment” {v. 2b}
What does God “weigh”?
our “heart”; our intentions/ motives
“All a man’s ways seem innocent to him, but motives are weighed by the Lord.” Proverbs 16:2 NIV `84

What does God discover?
what is in our heart; what our love is; what god we are worshipping; what motivates us

How do we make sure that we are following the correct authority in our lives?
by studying God’s Word and applying it to our lives; by inviting God to search our hearts and reveal to us any wrong motives
“For the Word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” Hebrews 4:12 NIV `84

“20 He went on: ‘What comes out of a man is what makes him “unclean”. 21 For from within, out of men’s hearts, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, 22 greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. 23 All these evils come from inside and make a man ”unclean”.” Mark 7:20-23 NIV `84

“23 Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. 24 See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” Psalm 39:23-24 NIV `84

“Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.” Psalm 51:10 NIV `84

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;” Proverbs 3:5 NIV `84

Where are you putting your trust for your decisions?

Proverbs 16:2; 17:3; 5:21; Hebrews 4:12;
Mark 7:20-23; Psalm 139:23-24; 51:10; Proverbs 3:5
