The purpose of my master’s thesis was to create a detailed spatial model of the Koněprusy caves’ middle tier using a 3D laser scanning system. The employment of this technology as an efficient method for cave measuring has gained advantage over the traditional speleological methods in the last five years. A number of large-scale and meaningful foreign projects prove this. The scanning was carried out without the use of control points, which significantly reduced the amount of time needed for the field work. All 124 scans along the cave tour route thus took 17 hours.

In the course of creating the model, the point cloud registration was performed using the iterative closest point algorithm based on the overlapping of multiple point clouds. Due to the complicated control point matching this method turned out to be rather time-consuming. The standard deviation of the global registration of the model reached the average value of 0.013 m. The model was then transformed into the reduced « Datum of Uniform Trigonometric Cadastral Network » (S-JTSK) system and into the « Baltic Vertical Datum — After Adjustment » (Bpv) system. The transformation accuracy is represented by the standard deviation of the identical points’ coordinate differences, the value of which is 0.020 m. The animation and visualization were used to present the final model. The thesis’s results should serve mainly to accurate documentation the current state of the cave’s middle tier, as well as to advertise the cave and help to sustain its natural legacy.
